WHY: Romantic weekend getaway
WHEN: November 2015
WHO: Me and my partner, Danny
- Details, Details -
TYPE: Country Club Hideaway.
ROOMS: 85 rooms comprised of cozy cottages, sophisticated suites and upscale lodges all set privately on lush forested grounds. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed (hello, Molton Brown bath products!), some with wood-burning fireplaces and private terraces. All rooms are bright and airy, decorated in soothing tones and comfy, luxurious textiles to make you feel cozy and at home: unwinding here is irresistible.
POOL/GYM: There is an adult pool (equally perfect for laps or for lounging and outdoor dining) and a family pool where children are welcome, both with whirlpools.
Fitness options are abundant and an experience of their own: a scenic 4.5 mile hiking trail along the estate grounds (complimentary bottled water stations throughout!), 7 tennis courts (training sessions and one-on-ones with experts available), 9 holes of golf, croquet (the main croquet lawn is a true centerpiece of the resort), and various complimentary classes daily (cycling, core, yoga among them). There is a fitness room equipped with cycles, elliptical machines, medicine balls, dumbbells and the like.
SPA: Is there ever. A true retreat designed to maximize privacy and restoration, there are 8,000 beautiful square feet consisting of 8 suites, male and female relaxation areas (with steam room, sauna, sitting area, and mineral pool), and private bathrooms with showers. Treatments of varying lengths are completely personalized with a trained spa therapist to create a “Wellness Journey” which can be supplemented with a specially crafted culinary menu. The design of the spa is truly serene with dark woods and windows that filter light in a stunning way.
VIBE: A sophisticated country club yet relaxed and warm.
BAR: The Restaurant Bar with it’s beamed ceilings, large windows and fireplaces is a warm and relaxed setting to enjoy wine and pre or post dinner cocktails.
RESTAURANT: The Restaurant at Meadowood (executive chef Christopher Kostow) has the highly acclaimed honor of being a Michelin Guide 3-star restaurant. They have a Tasting Menu and a Chef’s Counter Menu with optional wine pairings. The menus are seasonal and ingredients locally sourced, rooted in the Napa Valley community, to create an in-the-moment sensory experience. They have a second restaurant, The Grill, for more casual a-la-carte dining open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Service is top notch at both and the atmosphere remains upscale but relaxed. The in room dining menu is similar to that of The Grill’s and can be enjoyed on your private terrace, or even a picnic can be coordinated. Meadowood caters many events and at wineries throughout Napa!
WI-FI: Complimentary Wi-Fi throughout.
KIDS: The hotel is very family friendly. Aside from the family pool, there are expansive areas for kids to enjoy. During the summer months there is a children’s sports camp program. A separate children’s menu is available at The Grill.
LOCATION: Located in the quaint village of St. Helena and tucked away about a 5-10min drive from the center of town. It is about a 90min drive from SFO. Surrounded by vineyards, forested hills and mountains, the setting is as picturesque as it gets.

- A Few Things -
Meadowood was founded in 1964 as a private country club before being bought by vintner and real estate developer Bill Harlan in 1979. Mr. Harlan wanted to create a gathering place for the burgeoning winemaking community as well as Napa’s first luxury resort. To this day, it is this spirit of love for all things Napa and it’s community that is the pulse of Meadowood. From the wine and dining to the multitude of activities, everything here is intended to be a unique and authentic experience.
Host to many celebrations, weddings, and all kinds of special events, it is a true gathering place that maintains a sense of exclusivity and privacy.
During my visit, it was clear in every single interaction I had with a staff member how much pride and joy they had to be working at Meadowood.
- Complimentary perks for guests include local car service and a daily wine social, where two different types of local wines can be enjoyed.
- Give in to the old world scene by wearing your traditional whites to croquet.
