Thailand | The Siam

WHY: Weekend getaway
WHEN: April 2015
WHO: Me and my wife

An urban oasis that makes Bangkok living (dare I say) easy and glamorous.

TYPE: Architectural gem doubling as urban oasis.

ROOMS: The Siam is comprised of 39 suites and villas. That's right: only suites and villas. The Siam Suites are the entry-level category, all of which are housed in the main building. Like every room, each is individually decorated with turn of the century, authentic Thai memorabilia. My four nights were spent in a Mae Na suite, one of six total, and perfect for a couple or young family. The room was beautifully put together, with lots of open floor space, beautiful hardwood floors, and well-curated walls. Bathrooms are full-featured, and feel like an extension of the living space.

POOL/GYM: The infinity pool -- located riverside, and also known as 'the ultimate jet lag cure' -- is simply fantastic. The gym is large and offers all the amenities one would expect, including personal training, yoga, tai chi, and Muay Thai.

RESTAURANT: The Siam dishes out some outrageously good Thai food at a number of dining outlets. Deco is the go-to dining spot, regardless of the time of day. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon, dinner, and drinks -- it all happens here. I'd especially recommend the a la carte breakfast options, especially those from the Thai kitchen. Chon, the hotel's fine dining restaurant, serves up Thai classics, a welcome respite from street food.

VIBE: Smart, understated luxury.

SPAThe Opium Spa is widely regarded as Bangkok's best spa, and after having a treatment here, it comes as no surprise. An architectural stunner, the decor, atmosphere, and service is mind-numbingly good -- our hourlong massages were so relaxing, they put us to sleep. There are five treatment rooms offering all the requisite amenities, as well as a hair and nail salon.

WIFI: Complimentary throughout.

KIDS: While there is a children's spa menu and a dedicated splash pool, The Siam is best suited for couples, or families with older children who are more apt to appreciate the hotel and its surroundings.

LOCATION: Bangkok's Dusit neighborhood, somewhat removed from the tourist areas, and chock full of Bangkok authenticity and great river views. A half-hour car ride away from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK).

Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
Daily full breakfast, for up to two in room guests
One hour sunset cruise for two guests along the River of Kings

- A few things -

The Siam is a complete respite from Bangkok's crowded, loud, disorienting side. The Siam turns Bangkok into a city whose charms are easy to access; it simply makes the city stress-free.

I'm going to be up front with you: I loved this hotel. Everything about it - and I mean everything - put a smile on my face. It's hotels like these that remind me how important a good hotel is, that hotels aren't just a place to sleep at night (even if you're only in your room for a few hours a day). A hotel can shape one's perception of a new place, and a good hotel can make or break a trip. When its all said and done, I'm convinced that the Siam is the reason I enjoyed Bangkok so much, as it's the closest I've ever come to hotel perfection.
