Mexico | Viceroy Riviera Maya
- DETAILS, DETAILS -
TYPE: Boutique, adults-only beach resort.
ROOMS: Forty-one private villas, either oceanfront, ocean view or tucked away in the jungle gardens for a bit more privacy. Each offers a private patio, plunge pool and outdoor shower.
POOL/GYM: The winding, lagoon-style pool is located just steps from the beach (with a view to match!) There's also a fantastic gym with state of the art equipment and an ocean view, and oceanfront yoga classes take place on the resort's private pier.
RESTAURANT: There are two great restaurants serving contemporary interpretations of Mexican cuisine, using responsibly-caught seafood, fresh produce, and local ingredients: Coral Grill serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner al-fresco, while La Marea is a more contemporary setting. There's also a Friday night beach BBQ.
VIBE: Very sexy, Mexican chic.
BAR: The bar is oceanfront and next to the pool. We loved the tequila and ceviche tasting.
SPA: There's a full-service "jungle spa" that features a everything from a massage to a traditional Mayan fertility treatment. Equipped with several steam rooms, jacuzzis, and indoor/outdoor couples suites.
WIFI: Complimentary throughout.
KIDS: Viceroy Riviera Maya is an adults-only resort.
LOCATION: The resort is hidden in the small village of Playa Xcalacoco just outside Playa del Carmen. The resort is a 45-minute drive from Cancun International Airport (CUN).
- A few things -
I absolutely love the emphasis placed on Mayan culture the entire resort has, from start to finish you're exposed to Mayan foods and traditions. I was also very pleased with the detail given to the jungle areas, our walks to the beach uncovered hidden gems everyday.
We found a painters studio set up with easels and a ready to paint canvas if you're feeling inspired (they'll even mail you your painting once it dries). We also loved the reader's corner made into the perfect jungle escape, simply begging you to sit down and relax with a good book, and of course, since you're nestled in the jungle it was also great to just walk around and spot the monkeys in the trees or hanging out around the waterfalls.
It's a very special place that gives you the option to be as adventurous or as relaxed as you'd like all the while making sure you have a true Mexican experience. The six of us had a blast going from villa to villa, hanging out on the beach and exploring the Mayan ruins.
